Are You A Peacock or a Penguin?

On my trip to visit my daughters recently I took a few different books to read. The one I want to share with you is A Peacock in the Land Of Penguins. I believe everyone experiences a time in their life when they don’t fit in…when they want to stand up for themselves for being different from the rest of the pack. Some of us do, most of us do not.

Although this book focuses on the business world, the information is valuable from a business or personal perspective. When your view differences from others, how do you handle it? Are you confident? Do you stay silent or do you go along with the majority? Are you a peacock in the land of penguins?

Bouncing Back Baby!!

In the past few weeks I have focused on resilience because I know from my studies and working with clients the positive impact it can have on our lives. Below are two more skills that can support you in being more resilient. I believe learning to use these skills will help you recover from setbacks more quickly as well as creating a deeper, richer life.

Control or No Control.  Determine what you have control over and what you do not. On a piece of paper, make two columns. On the left side of the page, write Control and on the right side, Not Under My Control. Ask yourself:  What do I have control over? In that column, write down your answers. For example, you can control the television shows my kids watch, your own attitude, the religion you practice, who you choose to socialize with, and so on.

The following information was sent to us by Laura Rowles:

Comptroller Peter Franchot visited with Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce (GGCC) members as part of his listening tour.

“Our small businesses have been working hard to ride out the recession and they have a lot to say about the economic conditions in the State. We appreciate having Mr. Franchot meet with our members. It is a great opportunity for them to talk with the State Comptroller,” said Marilyn Balcombe, GGCC Executive Director.

Comptroller Franchot started off the discussion by thanking all the businesses present for stimulating economic development. He noted that Maryland Federal Government needs to “live within our means”.

Franchot also mentioned that Republicans & Democrats need to work together, stating it is “common sense”.
