$25,000 Scholarship for Montgomery College Students

The Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce (GGCC) provides scholarship support in various amounts to Montgomery College students to assists with costs in hopes that the individuals will give back to the community and work in Montgomery County. This year the GGCC has decided to raise $25,000 dollars.

“We feel that it is our responsibility to make sure that we help provide an educated workforce. We’d like to have either a business or engineering student with financial needs. We want to make sure that the scholarship really helps students graduate in their field and give back to our community,” said GGCC President/CEO Marilyn Balcombe.

On June 23rd, the Mid-Atlantic Federal Credit Union, headquartered in Germantown, presented a $2,000 dollar check for the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce’s Montgomery College Scholarship Foundation.

Police Adventure Camp!

The 4th Police Adventure Camp at Viers Mill Elementary School focused on teaching incoming 4th, 5th, and 6th graders skills like decision making, how to refuse drugs and alcohol, and resisting peer pressure.

"It started out with 30 at-risk youth. They came in, we talked about making good decisions: resisting drugs, alcohol and gangs and gave them skills to be better students," said Officer Amy Daum.

The camp is a partnership between Montgomery County Police Department, Montgomery County Public Schools and Linkages to Learning. The Linkages to Learning Program assists students and their families with services to help children be successful in school, at home, and in the community.

Eight Local High Schools Ranked among Newsweek’s Top 500 High Schools

Of the 19 schools on the Maryland state list, eight were Montgomery County Public high schools. Seven of those MCPS schools were among the top ten in the state, according to a new measuring system created by Newsweek to rate the success of a high school in “turning out college-ready (and life-ready) students.” The results of the publication’s revamped national rankings were released online on June 20th, along with an explanation of the methodology used to rank the schools. Newsweek no longer publishes a national ranking based on Jay Mathew’s High School Challenge Index that appears in The Washington Post.

Summer Reading Program for Babies, Kids & Teens

Summer Reading Program for Babies, Kids & Teens

Children and teens are invited to participate in this year’s Summer Reading Program at Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) which will run from June 18 through August 13.MCPL will kick off Summer Reading for children at the Aspen Hill Library on Saturday, June 18th at 11 a.m.

Registration is online only through the library’s website at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/library beginning June 15. Participants can sign up for the program and log the books they read using any computer in the library or at home or school, or using any mobile device.

This year’s Summer Reading Program is offered programs on three levels:

#1 in Graduation Rate for a Third Straight Year

According to a national report released Tuesday, June 7th, Montgomery County Public Schools has the highest graduation rate among the nation’s largest school districts for the third year in a row.

The annual Diplomas Count report, published by Education Week, calculated MCPS’ graduation rate at 85.7 percent. This is a 2.6 percentage point increase over last year’s report. It is significantly higher than the rate for the nation (71.7 percent) and the state of Maryland (76.8 percent).

Upcoming Fair at Silver Spring School

On Wednesday, June 1st Saint Francis International School will bring parents and students together for learning, fun, and service to others at their 1st Annual Mission Fair.

At 8:40 am the entire student body will gather together for the last time this school year to celebrate mass at St. Camillus Church. Students are invited to attend mass in clothing that represents their ethnic heritage.
